Senior Picture in Roses in Sandy, UtahWe recently had Megan from Ogden High in for her High School Senior Portraits. Megan selected our Organic session style and and was totally game for trying out a new location I had been eyeing for a while. This new location had some beautiful tall grasses, trees, a cute bridge and amazing roses. We then traveled to another location close to our studio that offers amazing backgrounds with plenty of flowers, grasses, rocks, sand, and water!

Many of our high school senior clients ask us how important is the portrait location? Well, it is both very important and not important at all. It is very important because a location should compliment the style of your portraits. That is the reason that we have each of our portrait clients select a session style when they call to book their appointment. Knowing what session style(s) they are wanting, helps us determine which locations would be most appropriate for them. We then offer advice on what type of clothing and props may be best suited for a particular location. It will also help us determine when we should schedule the session. Some locations photograph better in the morning, while others in the evening. Lighting at a particular location is extremely important to us creating the best possible portrait for you!

When is a location not important at all? We have been in situations when a client has requested a location that we have never been too. We aren’t worried in the least, as we always come prepared to make the best out of any situation/location. I absolutely love the challenge of arriving at a location that I’ve never been to and examining its potential. With our over 15 years of shooting experience, we can create amazing portraits for you nearly anywhere!

So when you call to schedule your senior portraits, just think about what session style {Organic, Urban, Couture, or Passion} you would like and we’ll take care of the rest, unless of course you have an idea for a location, in which case we’ll hop aboard! Please visit our Senior Portrait website to view samples of our session styles!

Orem High Senior Portrait Photograph
Last week we had the opportunity to do another ROCKSTAR Session for a truly awesome high school senior, Ambry! Ambry goes to Orem High School and is one of the best models I’ve ever worked with. What made Ambry such a great model? Well, she was totally fearless and just let loose and had fun! If you are preparing for your upcoming session, here are a few modeling tips that will make your senior portrait session fun and unique.

ROCK your Session! {Modeling Tips}
1. Think of us as Friends! We LOVE photographing High Schools Seniors. We love your energy and uniqueness! We think every person we photograph is beautiful and you don’t need to feel self conscious or awkward with us. We are young (well relatively), we are experienced (we know lighting, angles, and colors that will compliment your most beautiful features), and we are friendly!!!
2. Be You! Yup, it’s that simple. We want to capture you not that fake/stiff smile. Just be you! Let us see your personality, tell us about your interests and passions! It doesn’t matter if your goofy or grumpy, we’ll take you however you are and truly capture you!
3. Mix it UP! We are more than happy to help you into a cool pose, but feel free to mix it up a little after each shot. Move your hand, pull a different face, crouch down, heck…stick out your tongue at us for all I care! Feel free!
4. Interact! Wether studio or location we will put you in different environments that will compliment your clothes, personality, etc. Feel free to interact with that environment to make your portraits more dynamic.
5. Trust Us! We figure that since you chose us out of all the other photographers out there, that you like what we do. We promise that your session and portraits will not be ordinary or boring. We are hear to capture you uniquely!

Make sure you check out our website to learn more about our ROCKSTAR Session!

West Jordan High School PicturesWe started off our Class of 2011 senior portrait season this past week. Our first senior was Emily Millar. She is a super creative girl and she wanted some very different senior portraits. We photographed Emily’s Senior pictures in Salt Lake City and did some night shots. My favs were the ones we did in the campaign colored dress that she made herself. Our next senior was Spencer Pond, he wanted to go with our urban style session so we also photographed him in Salt Lake City. Spencer is totally easy going and was really fun to work with. I like the ones we did by the pillars and the red door the best.

sessionsale 1024x682 Senior Portrait Summer Session SALE! | June 6 12thToday marks the first day of our Summer Session Sale! This is our biggest SALE of the year and definitely the best time to book your high school senior portraits. Class of 2011, why do your senior portraits this summer before your senior year starts? We get that question a lot and here are 5 great reasons to get yours done early.

1. You will save 1/2 off your session if you take advantage our our Summer Sale (must call or book online June 6th-12th). Sessions must be scheduled before August 31st.
2. The weather is nice. Do you know that this spring we had snow in the valley well into May? While the spring can be a great time for portraits, the weather is very unpredictable and with our Spring-time schedule being packed with late comers, we usually don’t have any time to reschedule appointments so you may have to do yours in the rain or snow and might make wearing that cute sun dress or high heals a real challenge.
3. Beat the rush. With many seniors waiting till fall or spring to do their senior portraits, we encourage you to beat the rush and get yours done early! Pre-order your Designer Announcements and get a discount!
4. Sport that summer tan.We all know how long and cold our winters are in Utah and lets face it, unless you are visiting the tanning booth (please don’t!) or vacationing frequently (please do!) you may be a little pale from your winter hibernation. Why not show off that awesome summer glow in your photos and get them done before school starts? (I hope I haven’t offended any goths, I love your look too and I have some great ideas for your portraits…give us call!)
5. Did I mention that you will save 1/2 off your session? What more reason do you need?

mce 007 Session Styles | Utah Senior Portrait Photography StudioThis April and so far this May we have photographed 19 seniors and have had a blast doing it! We love photographing high school seniors and keeping up on the challenge of keeping each session fresh, unique and fun! We have 4 session styles that our seniors can choose from {Organic, Urban, Passion, and Couture}. Our session lengths {1 Hr, 1.5 Hr, 2 Hr, or our RockStar 3 Hr} determines how many session styles they can choose from and how many locations and outfit changes we will have time for. Most of our high school seniors choose our Session THREE {2 Hrs, 2 Locations, 4-5 Outfits}.

Our Organic Session Style is our most popular with Urban following closely behind. Here are some recent sessions we’ve done using our Urban and Organic locations.

nsse 037 Spicing it up! | High School Senior PortraitsThis last weekend we had the chance to capture some great images with Camille at one of our favorite spots.
Despite an arctic wind and threatening clouds, we were able to get some great shots with some of our ultra-cool new lighting techniques. Camille’s easy smile and great style made it even easier though. She was a real trooper and you’d never know we were bundled up in four layers of fleece, gloves hats and even snow jackets! In May!!! Come on Summer!
We froze just watching her walk down the beach casually for her shoot, wearing a perma-smile the whole time! Way to go Camille.

This week we had an amazing chance to do some beautiful photos with Nina in her traditional Navajo dress. She even brought along props and a professional to make sure everything was just right, and the work paid off. We love working with props and sets and creating stories that jump right from the photos.

Nina lucked out and got us on the best day of the week; a light breeze, some nice sun, and temperatures that almost made it feel like Spring was here at last!

bbse 027 1 Busy and beautiful, all thrown in a blender! We have been busy busy busy here at the studio, with more seniors scheduling shoots than ever before.
But Mother Nature’s thrown us quite the creative curveball as of late. With so many shoots scheduled and amazing ideas ready to go for each, the weather has proved to be the biggest challenge so far this year!
From shooting in the rain to creating fantastic urban-styled images in nearly 50 mile-per-hour winds, dust and dirt, we’ve had our creative juices stretched lately, and the results are coming out beautiful!

This past week we were able to do a great urban shoot with Braelynn, complete with unique backgrounds, amazing outfits and fantastic locations…but all in the rain! Not just a light drizzle either, we’re talking torrential tropic downpour!
Braelynn was a star and toughed it out both with, and without an umbrella! She stayed poised and stylish, all while getting soaked completely through. Let’s just say it’s a good thing we were on the other side of the lens, because we didn’t look half as cool soaking wet as she did!

Last night we had an awesome shoot, despite the hurricane force winds (it felt like it anyways!), flying debris (yup, we had that too) and massive end-of-the-world-looking storm clouds blocking out any available light.
But this is exactly where our experience gets the chance to come out and shine!
What’s a good photography team to do when a dust cloud the size of Wyoming blocks out the sun? Easy! We bring our own. And we’re not talking your standard ‘snap on the top of the camera’ flash here either, we’re way to creative for that. Boxes, cables cords and bulbs, power packs batteries and straps galore.
Mariah was a hard-core outdoor trooper as she braved windy conditions (with gorgeous hair the whole time by the way!), flying flowers and even a few floating weeds, all with cute outfits, an easy smile and an even better laugh!

We’re lucky to have such great clients, trusting our creativity and experience, even during such crazy weather.

enr 086 Utah Senior Portrait PhotographyThis year we ventured into the senior portrait market like never before. We have always done senior portraits, but this year we decided to create an entirely new website, session options, product line, and advertising campaign to specifically meet the needs of high school seniors in Utah. I must say that we have had a blast doing this and we are so excited at the tremendous response we have gotten. In our first month after launching the new campaign, we photographed 18 seniors and loved every minute of it. We plan to further market to class of 2010 and the upcoming class of 2011 seniors over the next few months and we hope to photograph at least 100 seniors next year. Help us spread the word to high schoolers you might know and check out some of our recent senior portrait sessions in this fun video and let us know what you think by leaving a comment below!

nle 38 Senior Portraits West Jordan High | Nastassia LeekLast night we photographed Nastassia’s senior portraits. Nastassia is a senior at West Jordan High School and she is no typical girl. She is our first senior to bring a riffle to the session. :) She is an avid hunter and wanted some nice portraits of her enjoying her passion. She chose our organic senior portrait session and we had a blast photographing in river beds, leaves, near barns and horses. Here are our artist picks from the session. Let us know what you think and leave a comment below.

aes 031 Meet our November Senior of the Month | Utah Senior PortraitsMeet our November Senior of the Month, Angelynn Eskelson from West Jordan High School. Read her great nomination letter written by her mother.

“Angelynn is very deserving of being a Photoumbra Studios Senior of the Month. Se is an exceptional teenager because she is constantly thinking of others. She is a great help in the neighborhood to many young couples. She often tends their children at no cost. She is also good to make friends with the younger girls in our neighborhood. She is a shining example to them to do what is right. Angelynn has been involved in various service projects such as cleaning up litter on community grounds and at one time, made blankets for the children at the Christmas Box. I, her mother, have been a single parent now for 8 years. Consequently, Angelynn has gone without some of the luxuries of life that others her age enjoy. She is the most deserving teenager I know.”

We were so happy to select Angelynn to receive a free portrait session and some free prints, we saw first hand what a great person she is! Here are some of our favs from her session. If you know someone who is deserving to be our Senior of the Month, please visit our senior portrait website and click on the “Senior of the Month” tab to nominate.
