I guess if there is one thing you can count on with Utah weather, it is that it is very unpredictable and usually our storms don’t last too long. So we packed up anyway and headed out into the storm hoping for the best. Once we got to the location the rain stopped and while the sun was scarce, we were able to pull off some amazing photos with the help of our portable sun that we like to bring out on cloudy days.
(For the geeks) Our portable sun is essentially an extra flash unit that we mount to a large soft box. We control the flash by mounting a transmitter unit (made by radio poppers) to our on-camera flash and then hooking a radio receiving unit to an additional flash that my assistant holds. The coolest part of this system is that I can adjust the power of the off camera flash right from the flash unit on my camera. As you can see in the photos, this extra off-camera light adds more depth to the photos and provides a much more natural and interesting lighting on the subject.
